Interaction Designer embedded within the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra), working across the Identity Management and Fish Licensing service teams to bring user-centred design practice into government digital delivery.

The challenge
Bring user-centred design to the Identity Management & Fish project teams, building upon previous work to shape the service based on user research, GDS standards and accessibility guidelines.
Design process
The component being designed was shared across multiple services, requiring consultation with different teams to ensure the right solution for each use case. The GOV.UK prototyping kit was used to build interactive prototypes in code — enabling realistic usability testing and direct handoff to development teams.

The fish licensing service covers getting a licence, renewing via Direct Debit, expiry reminders, and catch returns — a cyclical journey across multiple touchpoints and letter types. Designing for this required understanding the full lifecycle, not just individual screens.
Impact
Designs improved the usability of the IDM system and fishing service for a large base of users. A dynamic prototype was created for a joint collaboration between Defra and HMRC, demonstrating the shared component working across both departments’ services.
